FACTORY Over 45 Johnston & Murphy factory stores are located around the country. The average size is 2,300 square feet. Originally designed to clear seasonal discontinued and factory damaged merchandise, these stores now offer an assortment of value product in current styling and sizes. Presidential Heritage: Johnston & Murphy has served as shoemaker to the American Presidents since 1850. It was in that year that William Dudley crafted a pair of shoes for President Millard Fillmore as a goodwill gesture. This began a tradition that has lasted for more than 150 years. In Fall 2009, Johnston & Murphy presented a pair of custom-designed runoff oxfords in black to President Barack Obama, along with a pair of boots inspired by the pair the company custom-made for President Lincoln in 1861. In the summer of 2008, Johnston & Murphy launched the website www.shoesofthepresidents.com as a tribute to its presidential heritage. A Footwear Legacy: A FOOTWEAR LEGACY ? Founded in 1850 in Newark, New Jersey by William J. Dudley, an English shoe maker who had immigrated to the United States ? Originally manufactured and sold men’s dress shoes ? Changed name to Johnston & Murphy in 1884 when James Johnston and William H. Murphy took over the company ? Bought by General Shoe Corporation (now Genesco Inc.) in 1951 and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1957 ? Opened first retail store in 1971 outside of Chicago.
